Green Dam: Ambitious plans for 34,000 hectares of new plantations in 2026-2027
The Green Dam rehabilitation and expansion project successfully covered over 42,000 hectares between 2023 and 2026. Looking ahead to the 2026-2027 season, authorities aim to plant an additional 34,000 hectares, part of a broader 48,000-hectare forestry initiative involving 38.8 million saplings. These efforts focus on restoring ecosystems and boosting rural agriculture through fruit-bearing species like olive and carob trees. Furthermore, the forestry sector is actively valorizing national assets by establishing 141 recreational forests and granting hundreds of exploitation permits, thereby creating local income sources and fostering sustainable economic development in forestry areas.
