French Senator Pascal Savoldelli has formally called on his government to intervene regarding the imprisonment of Sahrawi rights activist Naama Asfari, held in Morocco since November 2010. In a written question to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the senator highlighted that the UN and the Committee Against Torture have declared his detention arbitrary and deemed his confessions obtained under duress to be invalid. The senator also condemned the ongoing obstacles faced by Asfari’s French wife, Claude Mangin, who has been barred from visiting him since January 2019, including being denied entry to Morocco in October 2026. Citing also the restricted access of local French officials, Savoldelli demanded that France use its position as a permanent member of the UN Security Council to pressure Morocco into complying with international recommendations for Asfari’s release.
