France: Massive police deployment as protests against high cost of living continue
France is facing a new wave of protests against the rising cost of living, met with a significant security crackdown. Approximately 70,000 police officers and gendarmes have been deployed, utilizing armored vehicles and helicopters to maintain order. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed 135 arrests and the seizure of various weapons to prevent renewed violence. In Lyon, police used tear gas to disperse crowds. Authorities also implemented precautionary measures, shutting down major Parisian museums and subway stations. While President Emmanuel Macron pledged concrete measures following talks with student groups, unions have criticized the restrictions placed on march routes. These tensions persist against a backdrop of ongoing economic challenges and financial pressure in France.
