France: Social Unrest Used to Scapegoat Immigrant Communities

French citizens of North African and African descent are facing renewed xenophobic rhetoric in the wake of the recent riots in France. Despite the fact that the demonstrators are French, right-wing and far-right political figures have systematically blamed immigrants for the instability. Éric Zemmour made aggressive comments describing the rioters as a "horde," while National Rally leader Jordan Bardella used the unrest to call for an end to immigration, claiming the country has failed to assimilate these populations. Similar views were echoed by figures such as Bruno Retailleau and Éric Ciotti, who linked security concerns directly to migration. Media commentators, including Charles Consigny, have also blamed the children of immigrants for the ongoing vandalism. Meanwhile, the French Magistrates' Union noted that police violence has specifically targeted youth from the suburbs. These accusations lack official statistical evidence regarding the rioters' identities and serve to distract from the underlying economic and social crisis in France, which has no connection to the presence of immigrants.
