Western Sahara: Algeria reaffirms commitment to self-determination at the UN

Addressing the UN Fourth Committee, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, reiterated his country's principled stance on the Western Sahara issue. He described the territory's status as an unfinished decolonization case, asserting that a fair and lasting solution must be rooted in the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination. Bendjama emphasized that sovereignty resides solely with the Sahrawi people and criticized any attempts to impose predetermined outcomes. Furthermore, he called on the international community to continue supporting Sahrawi refugees and cautioned against the politicization of humanitarian aid, warning the UNHCR against being pressured into using food assistance as leverage to undermine the political aspirations of the population.
