The National Independent Authority for Elections has begun notifying political parties of rejected applications for the upcoming local elections on November 28. These disqualifications are governed by Article 184 of the electoral law, which allows for the rejection of candidates due to suspected ties to illicit financial circles, based on security and administrative screenings. Exclusions have been reported in various municipalities, including Sidi M'hamed, Algiers Center, and Annaba, affecting parties such as the FLN and 'Voice of the People'. Affected parties have a 30-day window to propose replacement candidates, a challenge exacerbated by the initial difficulties in recruiting applicants. Similar to Article 200 applied during the previous legislative elections, Article 184 is facing criticism from political circles over the lack of final judicial rulings and the broad discretionary power it grants to the election authority.
