Foreign currencies hold steady on Algeria's informal market

Informal currency markets in Algeria, including the famous Port-Saïd square, have seen exchange rates remain virtually frozen since Thursday, October 15, 2026. The euro is trading at 277 dinars, while the US dollar holds at 238 dinars. These parallel market figures significantly outpace the official rates published by the Bank of Algeria, which list the euro at approximately 151 dinars and the dollar at 134 dinars. Prices in the informal sector are influenced by transaction volume and location. The British pound remains the most expensive currency, fetching 313 dinars, whereas the Canadian dollar fluctuates between 167 and 170 dinars. Meanwhile, Gulf currencies like the Emirati dirham and Saudi riyal continue to be traded by travelers and expatriates, highlighting the ongoing gap between official banking channels and the parallel exchange circuit.
