The UN General Assembly’s Fourth Committee adopted a resolution on Thursday with 152 votes in favor, reaffirming the Sahrawi people's inalienable right to self-determination. The decision cites the UN Secretary-General’s report from July 31, 2026, reaffirming the status of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue and referencing Security Council resolution 690, which established MINURSO. The committee requested the Special Committee on Decolonization to continue its review and report back at the 82nd session. Sidi Mohamed Amar, the Polisario Front's representative to the UN, described the vote as a validation of the legal framework surrounding the issue. He argued that the resolution serves as a clear rebuttal to Morocco's efforts to alter the legal nature of the conflict and criticized the support provided by certain countries for policies that contradict the UN Charter.
