Djanet Declaration: A New International Framework for Protecting Tassili Rock Art
The second international meeting on preserving Tassili n’Ajjer's rock art, held alongside the first Djanet International Festival of Rock Art, concluded with the adoption of the "Djanet Declaration." This foundational document establishes a framework for the protection and preservation of African rock art heritage. Key recommendations, presented by the Ministry of Culture and Arts, include prioritizing comprehensive inventories through modern digital technologies and promoting multidisciplinary scientific research. Participants called for enhanced preventive conservation measures against climate change and human-induced risks, alongside stricter legal protections to combat trafficking and site vandalism. The declaration also emphasizes empowering local communities and site guides through training and technical support to ensure the long-term safeguarding of these vulnerable sites.
