Digital payments rise in Algeria as cash remains a staple
Financial institutions in Algeria are increasingly offering digital payment solutions, such as prepaid cards and mobile transactions. By the end of 2024, the Bank of Algeria reported nearly 19.85 million active bank cards, while the number of electronic payment terminals increased by 28.1% year-on-year. Consequently, online transaction values surged by 127.8%, reaching 28.5 billion dinars. Banks have introduced tools like prepaid CIB cards and QR code-based mobile apps like Wimpay to streamline daily expenses and bill payments. Specialized services have also been tailored for specific needs, such as professional imports or religious travel costs. Despite this digital growth, the transition away from cash is gradual. Future progress relies on expanding merchant terminal access, ensuring network reliability, and building consumer trust in electronic services.
