On Thursday, the Bir Mourad Raïs court sentenced Hakim Bettache, the former president of the Algiers-Centre APC, to four years in prison for abuse of office. The conviction relates to a 1,400-unit social housing project that has been delayed for 12 years. Additionally, real estate developer Noureddine Leklak received a seven-year prison sentence for fraud after failing to deliver housing despite collecting significant payments from subscribers. Nearly 1,000 subscribers have joined the case as civil parties, disputing claims that they had accepted alternative housing solutions offered by local authorities.
