UN: Amar Bendjama asserts that Western Sahara remains a decolonization issue

Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, stated that the Western Sahara remains an incomplete decolonization case. He noted that its legal status is firmly established by UN General Assembly resolutions and an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, which recognize it as a non-self-governing territory. During an address to the Fourth Committee, Bendjama emphasized that the right to self-determination must reflect the free will of the Sahrawi people, as outlined in resolutions 1514 and 1541. Furthermore, the Algerian diplomat maintained that no entity, including the Security Council, holds the authority to grant sovereignty over the territory, asserting that the Sahrawi people are the sole authority that must decide their future.
