Police identify elderly suspect in firearms smuggling attempt via fingerprints

Algerian border police successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle a category 6 firearm, along with binoculars and several mobile phones, into the country. The suspect, an elderly man residing in Lyon, France, fled the scene, leaving his belongings behind when intercepted. Forensic analysis of fingerprints found on the abandoned items allowed the National Security laboratory to identify the individual, known as B.K. During his court appearance at the Sidi M’hamed tribunal in Algiers, he pleaded guilty to customs violations and illegal transport of a weapon. He claimed to have owned the firearm for seven years and requested release due to his advanced age and chronic illnesses. Despite the prosecutor's request for pre-trial detention, the judge ordered the defendant to be placed under judicial supervision and adjourned the case until next week.
