Algeria calls for Security Council reform and permanent African representation
Addressing the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Algeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Amar Bendjama, urged for an urgent reform of the Security Council. He highlighted the structural flaws that hinder the Council's ability to address international security challenges effectively. Algeria officially backed the African common position, calling for the correction of the historical injustice of the continent's under-representation. The Algerian proposal includes granting Africa at least two permanent seats, complete with veto powers, alongside five non-permanent seats. Such changes, according to the ambassador, are essential to ensure a more legitimate, democratic, and accountable body.
