Strict Legal Measures: Death Penalty for Drug Traffickers, Arsonists, and Child Kidnappers

On Sunday, October 18, 2026, the Algiers Criminal Court sentenced two individuals to death for trafficking 144 kilograms of synthetic drugs, equivalent to 235,000 ecstasy pills, under the 2025 law on drug prevention. Meanwhile, recent amendments to the Penal Code, published in issue 72 of the Official Gazette, have established the death penalty for those convicted of child abduction involving torture or sexual assault, as well as for deliberate forest arson. The updated legislation also mandates capital punishment for acts targeting public security, the national economy, or state institutions. Furthermore, the law penalizes those who incite, fund, organize, or facilitate these crimes through any means, including social media, and explicitly excludes the granting of mitigating circumstances for these offenses.
