Felipe VI asserts Spanish sovereignty over Ceuta and Melilla amid Rabat's silence

During his visit to Ceuta, King Felipe VI declared that Spanish sovereignty over the cities of Ceuta and Melilla is non-negotiable. The monarch demanded the swift return of individuals who entered Spanish territory illegally in late July, while stressing the importance of treating them with dignity. While seeking to maintain neighborly relations, the King emphasized that Spain's borders are also those of Europe. Rabat has maintained official silence, opting to boycott the Spanish National Day reception rather than engage in a direct diplomatic confrontation. Analysts suggest this restraint stems from Moroccan efforts to prioritize migration issues over sovereignty disputes, while also considering the political implications of upcoming Spanish elections. During the visit, the royal couple also paid their respects at the graves of migrants who died attempting to cross the border in July.
