Transnet, the South African state-owned logistics firm, has signed a $400 million, ten-year agreement with the US-based rail equipment company Wabtec. The contract focuses on maintaining the 43D and 44D locomotive fleets to ensure reliable transport of exports and general cargo across the country's freight corridors. Rather than purchasing new equipment, the deal emphasizes component supply, technical support, and the implementation of predictive maintenance technology, such as the Expert-on-Alert platform, to minimize downtime. This initiative supports Transnet’s ongoing recovery efforts following its first annual profit in four years. The partnership also includes knowledge transfer and local capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening the country's internal railway engineering expertise.
