Western Sahara: Growing opposition to the US resolution draft
The US draft resolution on Western Sahara is facing significant backlash. Sidi Mohamed Omar, the Polisario Front's representative to the UN, warned that the proposal deviates from international law and established Security Council principles. The draft suggests rebranding MINURSO by removing references to the referendum and converting it into a political mission, while promoting Moroccan autonomy as the sole solution. Eric Hagen of the Western Sahara Resource Watch argued that the text violates the UN Charter and serves to entrench occupation. The Polisario Front has warned that adopting these measures would force them to withdraw from the peace process, asserting that the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination cannot be sidelined.
