Assia Djebar's literary legacy discussed in Algiers

A literary event held at the Chaïb Dzaïr bookstore in Algiers recently explored the writings of Assia Djebar under the theme 'When memory becomes writing: voice, history, and transmission.' Organized ahead of the 8th Assia Djebar Novel Award ceremony, the conference featured analysis from academics Amar Guendouzi and Nabila Zouiche. Guendouzi examined the author’s 1957 debut novel, 'La soif' (The Thirst), noting the controversy it sparked due to the lack of direct references to the Algerian War, despite its underlying connection to the author’s roots. Zouiche focused on 'La femme sans sépulture' (The Woman Without a Grave), highlighting how Djebar captured the life of resistance fighter Zoulikha Oudaï and honored forgotten women of the revolution through a polyphonic narrative. The winners of the Grand Prix Assia Djebar, which recognizes top Algerian literary works, will be announced this Saturday at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center.
