New book dissects the "Iron Wall" doctrine and Israeli strategic culture

A new book by researcher Al-Jazi Rashid Al-Hassan Al-Sulaiti, published by the Al Jazeera Centre for Studies, examines the intellectual and historical roots of Israeli strategic culture. The book explores the evolution of Israel’s security doctrine, tracing it from Zeev Jabotinsky’s 1923 "Iron Wall" concept—centered on military supremacy—to the modern "periphery doctrine" and the Abraham Accords. It highlights a key paradox: while Israel has increasingly integrated into its region economically and diplomatically, it continues to rely heavily on military superiority and deterrence. The study also addresses the events of October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war in Gaza, viewing them as a critical test for Israel's containment and deterrence assumptions. The author concludes that the Abraham Accords represent a "functional peace" built on shared interests rather than a fundamental shift in Israeli strategic philosophy, describing this new phase as an evolved iteration of the "Iron Wall" logic integrated into diplomatic and economic frameworks.
