Soaring European Gas Prices Provide Economic Boost to Algeria

European natural gas prices have surged to their highest levels since late 2022, with the Dutch TTF market recording prices exceeding 86 dollars per megawatt-hour. Driven by Middle Eastern tensions and lower-than-average winter storage levels, this energy crisis highlights Algeria's critical role as a reliable supplier to Europe. Algeria currently stands as the leading gas provider for Spain, accounting for 34.2% of imports during the first nine months of 2026. For the Algerian economy, this price rally—combined with oil prices consistently above 100 dollars per barrel—serves as a significant windfall. These surplus revenues are vital for bolstering the state budget, funding infrastructure projects, diversifying economic sectors, and supporting social policies, as market prices currently significantly outperform the benchmarks projected in the 2027 finance law.
