Egypt prepares for potential direct military involvement in Yemen conflict

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has called for an extraordinary parliamentary session on Sunday, October 18, to seek approval for providing direct military support to Saudi Arabia in its ongoing war against the Houthis. During a military ceremony, Al-Sissi emphasized Egypt’s readiness to take all necessary measures to defend Saudi territory upon request. This move follows a series of lethal Houthi drone and missile strikes on Saudi infrastructure and cities. The President also highlighted the historical support received from Gulf nations since 2013. The conflict, which began in 2014, has escalated as Houthi rebels seized control of the strategic Bab el-Mandeb strait, potentially endangering Suez Canal transit. The potential entry of the Egyptian military—the largest in the Arab world—could significantly alter the regional balance of power.
