The Permanent Representative of Algeria to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama, stated that the Western Sahara remains an incomplete decolonization issue. During his address to the Fourth Committee of the UN General Assembly, the ambassador noted that the territory's legal status is firmly established, categorized as a non-self-governing territory under UN resolutions and the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice. Bendjama emphasized that the right to self-determination is rooted in the free will of the Sahrawi people, as outlined in General Assembly resolutions 1514 and 1541. He further asserted that sovereignty belongs solely to the Sahrawi people, and no body, including the Security Council, has the authority to grant such sovereignty without their essential consultation.
