Green Dam: A massive reforestation initiative to restore ecosystems
On the occasion of National Tree Day, the General Directorate of Forests launched the 2026-2027 planting campaign under the theme "Together, let's restore our forests." This initiative continues the rehabilitation of the Green Dam, which saw over 42,376 hectares planted between 2023 and 2026. The new campaign targets 34,318 hectares within the Green Dam area, part of a broader 47,917-hectare program utilizing 38.8 million saplings, including fruit and forest trees. Under the authority of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, efforts will prioritize areas affected by past forest fires. Officially launched in October 2023 in Djelfa with a 75-billion-dinar budget, the program covers 4.7 million hectares across 13 steppe provinces to combat desertification and preserve biodiversity.
