Souk Ahras: Criminal network targeting students and researchers dismantled
The economic and financial crime unit in Souk Ahras, supported by the cybercrime division, has dismantled an online fraud and money laundering ring. Using a Facebook page disguised as an "Academic Center for Researcher Support," the suspects scammed students and researchers by promising to write and publish scientific papers in exchange for money via WhatsApp. The investigation revealed that the illicit funds were funneled through third-party postal accounts and converted into virtual assets to obscure their origins. Following raids, authorities seized technical equipment and SIM cards, identifying 35 victims and discovering data on 419 individuals whose identities may have been misused. The suspects were brought before the prosecutor at the Taoura court, who ordered their detention. They face charges including criminal conspiracy, organized money laundering, unauthorized virtual asset trading, and forgery.
