Algeria: New Measures to Cap Profit Margins on Essential Consumer Goods

During the latest Council of Ministers meeting, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune ordered the implementation of a pricing and profit-margin cap system for four essential commodities: vegetables, legumes, pasta, and meat. The strategy emphasizes local, decentralized monitoring of product availability and prices. A digital database will be created to serve as an alert mechanism for immediate intervention when prices fluctuate abnormally. President Tebboune also directed an investigation into monopolistic activities by meat importers and requested a strict regulatory framework for sales intermediaries. Furthermore, the meeting addressed the progress of the mining railway project connecting Bled El Hadba to the port of Annaba, as well as water supply infrastructure for the desalination plants in Chlef, Mostaganem, and Tlemcen, highlighting the importance of protecting groundwater resources.
