Ahead of the local elections scheduled for November 28, Algeria is implementing rigorous safeguards to shield the ballot from the influence of illicit funds, following a successful precedent during the July legislative elections. Under Article 184 of the Electoral Law, candidate lists are being strictly vetted to ensure compliance with integrity standards, including clean criminal records, tax compliance, and no connections to suspicious business circles. The National Independent Authority for Elections (ANIE) has finalized the filing of 5,631 lists for municipal assemblies (APC) and 434 for provincial assemblies (APW) after invalidating non-compliant dossiers. Furthermore, Article 300 stipulates severe penalties, ranging from two to ten years in prison, for any form of electoral corruption or bribery. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune emphasized that the state is providing financial support to young candidates to ensure fair campaigns, reaffirming the goal of establishing transparent elected assemblies that truly serve the citizens.
