Foreign Currency Accounts in Algeria: Key Regulations and Usage Guidelines

All Algerian citizens, whether residents or living abroad, have the right to open foreign currency accounts at authorized commercial banks. Under Bank of Algeria regulations, account holders are free to transfer funds abroad, provided they stay within their account balance. However, cash withdrawals for travel purposes are subject to a limit of €7,500 per calendar year. Customs regulations require a written declaration for any physical currency transport exceeding €1,000. As of July 2026, the annual tourist allowance is no longer provided in cash; it is now issued via international payment cards linked to a foreign currency account, amounting to €750 for adults and €300 for minors aged 12 to 19. While banking practices vary across institutions, all are obligated to uphold the right of clients to access and utilize these accounts.
