Algeria proposes new tax on Sahara sand extraction in 2027 finance bill

A new provision in the 2027 finance bill aims to introduce a tax on the extraction of Sahara sand for the first time in Algeria. According to Article 182, a levy of 500 dinars per cubic meter will be applied to all forms of sand, including dune sand and wind-blown deposits. The policy targets 17 southern provinces where 250 extraction points are identified. Since this resource is heavily utilized in construction, infrastructure, and industrial projects, the government intends to capture significant revenue, projected at 700 million dinars annually, to bolster state finances. The measure seeks to end the current practice of exploitation without financial compensation to the public treasury.
