Long naps and health: What you need to know

Scientific reviews have highlighted a potential link between daily naps lasting an hour or more and increased risks of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. While these findings show a correlation, researchers caution that they do not prove the nap itself is the direct cause, as underlying health conditions and lifestyle factors play significant roles. Medical experts warn that frequent or excessive napping, especially when accompanied by daytime sleepiness, breathing issues, or chronic insomnia, warrants a medical evaluation. To enjoy the benefits of napping without health risks, it is recommended to limit naps to 20–30 minutes, schedule them early in the afternoon, and prioritize a consistent nightly sleep routine of at least seven hours.
