National Service for Algerians Living Abroad: A Guide to Procedures

All Algerian citizens aged 19 and older are required to fulfill national service obligations, regardless of their residence abroad, under the 2014 law. The process begins with mandatory census registration for those turning 17 between January and September. Diplomatic and consular representations are responsible for handling deferments, exemptions, and document replacements. Franco-Algerian dual nationals are governed by a 1983 agreement allowing them to complete military service in either country, provided they submit proof of their status to the Algerian consulate. Deferments are granted for students upon submission of current academic certificates, while exemptions based on medical or family hardship are evaluated by a ministerial commission. Failure to regularize one's status by the age of 25 can lead to legal action for non-compliance, as well as disqualification from public or private sector employment and independent professional practice in Algeria.
