Algeria calls for immediate reform of the UN Security Council to correct historical injustice against Africa
Algeria's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Amar Bendjama, urged for an accelerated reform of the Security Council during a session in New York. He argued that the body's structural deficiencies often undermine its effectiveness in addressing international security challenges, particularly those impacting Africa. Algeria officially advocates for correcting the historical injustice against the continent by granting Africa at least two permanent seats with full powers, including the veto, and five non-permanent seats, aligned with the common African position defined in the Sirte Declaration. According to the Ambassador, addressing Africa's under-representation is crucial to improving the Council's credibility and legitimacy. He further reiterated Algeria’s commitment to working constructively with all member states to achieve a comprehensive reform.
