Algeria Hosts Commemoration of Sahrawi National Unity, Reaffirming Right to Self-Determination

At the Moufdi Zakaria Palace of Culture in Algiers, diplomats, political figures, and activists gathered to mark the 51st anniversary of Sahrawi National Unity. The event emphasized the right to self-determination and called for the UN and the African Union to fulfill their responsibilities in completing the decolonization of Western Sahara. Participants recalled the significance of the October 12, 1975, assembly at Aïn Bentili, which solidified the struggle under the leadership of the Polisario Front. The Ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) highlighted Algeria's unwavering support and reviewed the legal history of the territory, which has been on the UN list of non-self-governing territories since 1963. Dr. Ayachi argued for the necessity of a referendum, noting that any alternative approach lacking the direct consent of the Sahrawi people would fail to be legitimate. The ceremony also featured a representative of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who drew parallels between the Sahrawi struggle and the Palestinian cause, calling on international bodies to uphold global law and justice.
