Western Sahara: UN overwhelmingly reaffirms right to self-determination

The international community has overwhelmingly supported the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, with 152 UN member states voting in favor of a resolution identifying Western Sahara as a decolonization issue. The vote, held in the UN's Fourth Committee, reinforces the principles of the 1960 Resolution 1514. Faced with strong international consensus, Morocco, which initially considered abstaining, ultimately joined the majority in favor. Algeria reaffirmed its firm stance, emphasizing that the territory's future must be decided by its people under international law, as supported by the International Court of Justice. The Polisario Front welcomed the resolution as a decisive rejection of attempts to undermine the Sahrawi struggle for independence.
