Algerian Economy: Strategies for Sustainable Growth and Fiscal Resilience

Algeria is currently focused on converting its natural resources into sustainable wealth while safeguarding its social achievements. IMF forecasts indicate that the fiscal deficit is expected to narrow to 9.6% of GDP by 2026, with gross public debt reaching 53.2%. The national economy grew by 3.9% in 2025, largely supported by non-hydrocarbon sectors. Economist Abdelkader Slimani argues that long-term stability requires greater spending efficiency, a broader tax base, and enhanced productivity. The IMF has commended the robustness of Algeria's banking sector and the country's successful removal from the FATF list. Recommendations emphasize using energy windfalls to bolster financial reserves and fund value-added projects rather than relying on volatile price fluctuations. Furthermore, digitizing tax administration, formalizing the informal economy, and fostering private sector growth are deemed critical to reducing reliance on government spending and driving sustainable exports.
