Algeria updates Penal Code: Death penalty for child abduction and arson

Issue 72 of the Official Gazette has published Law No. 26-13, which amends the Algerian Penal Code, following the signature of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. The new legislation imposes stricter penalties, including the death penalty for the abduction of children involving torture or sexual assault, with no eligibility for extenuating circumstances. Regarding arson, the law mandates capital punishment for those who set fires in forests, agricultural areas, or public and private properties that threaten national security, the economy, or the environment, or lead to loss of life. Additionally, the legal scope now encompasses those who incite, finance, or facilitate such crimes through any means, including digital platforms, and stipulates that individuals convicted of these acts are not entitled to reduced sentences.
