Road Infrastructure: A Major Modernization Plan to Ease Algiers Traffic and Connect the South
Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, has announced a major strategy to modernize Algeria's road network by 2027. The plan focuses on two key pillars: reducing traffic congestion in the capital and improving road connectivity in the deep South. For Algiers, the Birtouta-Khemis El Khechna segment is the top priority for 2026, with further works scheduled for the Zeralda and Boudouaou routes in subsequent budgets. To maintain infrastructure integrity, the Gendarmerie will be equipped with mobile weighbridges to clamp down on overloaded trucks causing road damage. Meanwhile, in the Grand South, an emergency fund of 1.413 billion dinars has been dedicated to repairing roads damaged by severe weather, including specific projects to connect isolated areas like Oued Samene and Bordj Omar Driss.
