Algeria launches massive national reforestation drive for the 2026-2027 season
Starting this Sunday, Algeria begins its 2026-2027 reforestation campaign in celebration of the National Tree Day. Under the theme "Together, let us restore our forests," the initiative, overseen by the Ministry of Agriculture, aims to rehabilitate areas damaged by wildfires and combat desertification. The campaign focuses on planting 38.8 million seedlings across 47,917 hectares, with a significant emphasis on the Green Dam project. These efforts are designed to improve ecological resilience, enhance carbon sequestration, and promote biodiversity by using species adapted to local environments. Between 2023 and 2026, the country successfully reforested over 42,376 hectares, incorporating various fruit-bearing trees such as olives and carobs. The initiative calls for collective participation from citizens and institutions to ensure the long-term sustainability of the nation's forest resources.
