A seminar at the Mouloud-Mammeri Cultural Center in Tizi Ouzou, led by the environmental directorate, addressed the sustainable management of olive mill waste. Mbarek Ait Aoudia, the local environmental director, reported that the region has 337 oil mills, over 150 of which are traditional units lacking modern waste treatment facilities. The primary environmental concern is olive mill wastewater, which poses a threat to soil and water quality due to its acidity. Experts Kaci Boukhlafa and Cherfouh Rabia suggested using natural evaporation to convert this waste into fertilizer. Additionally, research shows that treated olive pomace serves as an effective organic compost for various crops. The event concluded with recommendations to maintain sedimentation basins and establish a central olive cooperative and research institute to better support the sector.
