The specialized anti-corruption court in Sidi M'hamed has requested a 10-year prison sentence and a fine for former Water Resources Minister Arezki Berraki. Similar sentences were requested for two former directors of the National Agency for Dams. The case centers on irregularities surrounding a contract for the rehabilitation of the Medjez El Begar dam in Guelma. Prosecutors highlighted how illegal contract addenda caused the project cost to soar from 77 billion centimes to over 570 billion. The prosecution also requested sentences ranging from 7 to 20 years for other defendants, including an international arrest warrant for a private company manager. Arezki Berraki denied the charges, claiming that all procedures followed during his tenure were legal. Meanwhile, the Treasury's judicial agent has demanded 300 million dinars in compensation for damages caused to the state.
