Tunisia's Rising Debt Burden: Over 30 Loans Signed in Two Years

Tunisia is facing significant economic challenges, leading to a heavy reliance on domestic and foreign borrowing to cover budgetary shortfalls. Reports indicate that the nation secured 33 loans during the 2023-2025 parliamentary terms. Total debt has tripled over the last decade, reaching 136.6 billion dinars in 2024, compared to 47.2 billion in 2015. Following the 2020 decision to stop borrowing from the IMF, the government shifted toward domestic funding, which now accounts for an average of 62% of its borrowing needs. Analysis warns that some foreign loans come with non-financial conditions—either explicit or implicit—that may threaten national sovereignty. Furthermore, observers noted that the parliament has approved almost all submitted loan agreements since 2023.
