Western Sahara: Algeria reaffirms support for self-determination at the UN

Addressing the UN Special Political and Decolonization Committee, Algeria’s permanent representative, Amar Bendjama, stated that the Western Sahara issue remains an unfinished decolonization process. Citing UN resolutions and the International Court of Justice, he asserted that a lasting solution must be based on the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination through their free will. Algeria, participating as an observer alongside Mauritania in recent direct talks between Morocco and the Polisario Front, warned against the politicization of humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, diplomat Amar Belani noted that the "referendum" mandate of MINURSO continues to be a point of friction for Rabat, which is accused of attempting to weaken the mission's scope. With a Security Council meeting scheduled for later this month, the Polisario Front has criticized the UN envoy, Staffan de Mistura, for a perceived lack of neutrality.
