The National Institute of Plant Protection in Algeria is adopting a proactive approach based on monitoring and early warning systems to ensure the safety of agricultural crops. Karim Leqifat, director of the Constantine regional station, explained that the strategy focuses on analyzing climatic conditions and continuous field monitoring to identify risks before they escalate. The system relies on coordination between 17 regional stations and plant health inspectorates, prioritizing integrated pest management, which combines prevention, the use of resistant varieties, and judicious chemical intervention when strictly necessary. Simultaneously, the Technical Institute of Field Crops is working to diversify national production by introducing new varieties like rye and triticale. The goal is to strengthen food security and provide diverse, healthy options for consumers, while emphasizing the need to support these pathways by stimulating market demand and developing modern agricultural techniques.
