UN Fourth Committee Reaffirms Right to Self-Determination in Western Sahara

The UN Fourth Committee has adopted a resolution supporting the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, backed by 152 countries, including Morocco. The decision reinforces the legal status of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue, anchored in historical UN resolutions such as 1514 and 690. Although some Moroccan media outlets characterize recent events as a final resolution, Morocco's vote in favor of this text highlights a political contradiction, as the resolution explicitly requests the continued review of the territory's status by UN bodies. Sidi Mohamed Amar, the Polisario Front's representative to the UN, described the resolution as a legal rebuttal to Moroccan narratives, while Algeria reaffirmed its firm commitment to the decolonization process and the principle of self-determination in international forums.
