US 'Draft Zero' on Western Sahara faces strong opposition

The Polisario Front has formally rejected the US-proposed 'Draft zero' resolution to the UN Security Council regarding the MINURSO mandate renewal. UN representative Sidi Mohamed Omar warned that if the text is adopted in its current form, which he describes as a dangerous violation of international law favoring Morocco, the Front would withdraw from the peace process. The proposal is under heavy fire for allegedly trying to impose a Moroccan autonomy plan, sidelining the Polisario’s status, and stripping the UN mission of its referendum mandate by renaming it and significantly reducing its personnel. Diplomat Amar Belani noted that the draft is deeply biased and requires major revisions to restore balance. Meanwhile, 103 international law scholars have sent a letter to the UN Secretary-General, urging the Security Council to ensure any future resolution upholds the right to self-determination and the principles of decolonization as stipulated by international legal frameworks and the International Court of Justice.
