Data from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the University of Oxford indicates that Algeria has a multidimensional poverty rate of 1.4%, ranking it third in Africa for the lowest levels of poverty. This figure is based on 2018-2019 data, which affected approximately 598,000 people at the time, with population adjustments estimating that 646,000 people were affected in 2024. Additionally, 3.6% of the population is classified as vulnerable to multidimensional poverty. Unlike monetary poverty, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) measures simultaneous deprivations across health, education, and living standards, including access to clean water, electricity, and schooling. In Algeria, education contributes 49.3% to the index, followed by health at 31.2% and living conditions at 19.5%. Algeria currently trails only Seychelles and Tunisia, while performing better than countries like Egypt, Libya, South Africa, and Morocco.
