UN vote reinforces status of Western Sahara as a decolonization issue

With 152 countries voting in favor, the UN General Assembly's Fourth Committee has reaffirmed that the Western Sahara issue remains firmly categorized as a matter of decolonization. Sidi Mohamed Omar, the Polisario Front's UN representative, described the vote as evidence of international consensus regarding the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination, noting that Morocco's vote was a forced move to avoid diplomatic isolation. Meanwhile, diplomat Amar Belani countered Moroccan narratives, arguing that the resolution does not endorse Moroccan sovereignty over the territory. He clarified that references to Security Council resolutions do not signify an acceptance of Rabat's interpretation, as the UN text maintains that the conflict must be resolved through a process that ensures the Sahrawi people's right to self-determination.
