Since Tuesday, the commune of Sidi M’hamed Benaouda in the Relizane province has been drawing significant crowds, including local residents and members of the Algerian diaspora, for its annual waâda. The local population maintains a strong tradition of hospitality, offering couscous to all guests. The festivities feature spectacular fantasia performances by hundreds of horsemen representing various wilayas, alongside a bustling market showcasing traditional crafts and local products. A highlight of the three-day event is the traditional setup of the large tent by the 25 archs of the Flita tribe. This four-century-old gathering serves to foster community ties and preserve Algeria’s intangible cultural heritage. Sidi M’hamed Benaouda, who lived between the 10th and 11th centuries of the Hijra, was a renowned scholar who established a zaouïa for education and aid, and notably participated in the historic battle of Mazagran.
