Medjez El Begar Dam Corruption Case: Heavy Prison Sentences Requested for Former Minister

The prosecutor at the Economic and Financial Penal Pole in Sidi M’hamed has requested a 10-year prison sentence for former Minister of Water Resources, Arezki Berraki, along with two former directors of the National Agency for Dams and Transfers. The case involves corruption allegations related to the "Medjez El Begar" dam project in Guelma province. Prosecutors also requested sentences of up to 20 years for other defendants, including individuals subject to international arrest warrants. The public treasury is seeking 300 billion Algerian dinars in damages. During the hearing, it was revealed that the project costs were systematically inflated, surging from an initial 77 billion centimes to 570 billion through illegal contract amendments and significant changes to the project scope, violating public procurement regulations.
