The Rental Market in Algiers: Wide Disparities and Rising Costs
A recent study of 500 property listings in Algiers shows that the median rent for a three-room apartment (F3) is 97,500 DA, while a two-room (F2) averages 60,000 DA. The market exhibits significant geographical inequality; in affluent areas like Hydra, median rents reach 220,000 DA, whereas they remain much lower in districts such as Baraki and Bab El Oued. Given that the national minimum wage stands at 24,000 DA, housing costs represent a significant burden. An F3 apartment can cost up to four times the minimum wage, making independent living increasingly difficult for young workers and students, who often rely on shared accommodation or family support.
